POLICY: FINANCIAL TIMES, Bernard Simon: VANCOUVER CONFRONTS CRIME DEMONS...

Bernard Simon, FINANCIAL TIMES of London, on 23 March 09 reports on Vancouver's violent crime scene: Vancouver confronts its demons. "Mr Rezac puts much of the blame on what he sees as Canada’s 40 year-old bias in favour of rehabilitating criminals rather than protecting the public."  Click headline to see FT article

The justice system needs an overhaul....30 years overdue. Victims Survey is being conducted now, results will be interesting...anecdotally we have serious problem with violent crime. Big win for Wally Oppal on 2 for 1 credit for time served before conviction being eliminated by Mr Harper (or at least promised)...a good start. How about recurrency training for judges too? They invented 2 for 1 on their own...that's what happens when they drink their own bathwater. How about getting them out there to meet real people and see how they feel about their decisions. Recent Doobs and Webster report says 69% of Canadians and 74% of British Columbians do not have confidence in the judiciary. Mayor Dianne Watts of Surrey says she is in favour of electing judges, need some better accountability than we have now...Maybe it is time for a Royal Commission, but that takes so long, we need action now! ANd we need better treatment for addicts in jail and for those with mental health problems. But much more needs to be done, and the police have to be given the tools and power to get bad guys before a court more quickly, and the courts have to be connected to the consequences of their creating more victims by releasing chronic criminals back into society time, after time, after time...who is looking out for victims?

It is ridiculous how easily people walk from their crimes...
